CongressNews No. 4
Starting on Time
This congress has not been bad for prompt starts. At least not compared with some that I have been to.
But the best ever was Copenhagen, in 1982. The organiser, Sven Eggars, used to publish the draw late in the evening. So everyone knew who they had to play next day. We used analogue clocks, and he would set them all himself.
Then, at 9:30, he would run, yes, run, up and down the rows of boards starting all the clocks. Many boards have neither player present at this time.
This may seem an excessively strict system. But at least it meant that you always had plenty of time in the afternoon to enjoy the sights of Copenhagen.
