Pair Go Tournament

The Pair Go is a tournament where the team is composed of a female and a male, and very often there are some other reasons why they are together... So, why not in a go game? Twenty-eight couples met in a five-round tournament Swiss system and all deserted the splendid trip to Venice to play all day. The final standing was the following:

1. Hao-Jiang Zou + Laurent Heiser (average level 5 Dan) from Luxembourg
2. (Surprisingly) Astrid Gaultier + Julien Roubertie (5 Kyu) from France
3. Keiko Watanabe + Hiroshi Shima (5½ Dan) from Japan
3. Juan Guo + Wiet Bouma (3½ Dan) from the Netherlands
3. The French-Romanian pair Irina Suciu + Paul Drouot (½ Dan).

The atmosphere of this tournament was very relaxed, but that doesn't mean that the games weren't exciting: many fierce battles were conducted on the go-ban, and the decisive game was a nine-stone one! The surprise of the tournament was Saijo Sensei, who played this informal side event with the Italian Sonia Brazzoli. The handicap that they had to give to other pairs was very high, and they only won two games.
