The EGF Meeting

The room was hushed as players from 20 countries took their places in the top room. They were not there for the European Championship, but for the EGF delegates meeting.

After opening introductions, delegate were allowed to take their jackets off. Lithuania was accepted as a member and Bello-Russia as an "observer" country. Accounts and minutes were accepted. Alan Held and Thomas Pfaff retained their jobs as President and Treasurer; Martin Finke had already been thrown waste-deep into the role of Secretary and was appointed officially to this role. Help for Held was the next discussion and it was decided to appoint a Vice-President during the year to learn the role to help after Alan retires.

Next came information from the EGCC and progress on the translation of the promotional material.

The French presented their plan for the 1997 congress. A science campus in parkland near the sea at Marseille will be the venue. There will be an all day bar and hopefully good food despite the canteen having burnt down last week. In 1998 Romania will host the congress beside the sea not far from Constanza. The meeting decided that Slovakia will hold the 1999 congress in Bratislava, in preference to bids from Finland and Russia.

Organizer and Italian delegate, Gionata Soletti, then raised problems and issues to do with running congresses. This went on for a long time before the meal break and a long time after, but some important things were discussed.

Niek van Diepen then ran through the next year Grand Prix schedule and London was voted back its automatic place for the finals. The Rating program has not run yet due to various problems, but it will be run by December.

The meeting then skipped lightly through international tournaments, the go teacher programme in Japan and touring professionals, the Ing Cup and sponsorship, various European tournaments and the proposed European-US Super Go Internet series. Luckily the meeting ended before 23:00 to allow some late night drinking and relaxation for the delegates and the hard-working EGF executive.
