New Books

(by Peter Zandveld)

Tournament Go, John Power
A collection of 50 professional games, mostly with comments by professionals. All games are from the year 1992, at the time Go World was not appearing regularly. None of the comments have been published before in English. John Power is the well known author of “Invincible”, the book about Shusaku. Power is not only a good writer, but also very much concerned with quality. Unlike most other books published these two years this book has not been hastily put together. This is clearly the best book of the year. The book is in the first place intended for Dan-players and ambitious Kyu-players.

Lessons in the Fundamentals of Go, Kageyama (reprint)
This book is not for beginners, as the title suggests, but for players who like to get stronger. Kageyama explains how to study go. His witty style of writing makes it impossible to stop reading. You may risk losing a game for lack of sleep, but you will be compensated in the future. This book is in the first place for Kyu-players, but also of interest to Dan players.

Get Strong at Joseki 3, Bozulich
A collection of problems related to joseki. Each of the “Get Strong at Joseki” books contains a short section of basic joseki, followed by problems. The books are not dictionaries, but exercise books. The books are not intended to test your knowledge of joseki, but to train your feeling for shape, strategy and tesuji in and near the corner. For stronger Kyu and lower Dans.

36 Stratagems Applied to Go, Ma
Taking everything into consideration this is the best book by Yutopian so far. It is very well translated, has a reasonable layout, and - most importantly - interesting contents. The book is based on a contemporary military instruction book, that was in its turn based on the ancient Chinese traditional works on military strategy. Ma found an application of each of the stratagems in go (by the way: a stratagem is not a strategy, but a (dirty) trick). The situations used as examples are mostly from professional games, with analyses aimed at high level players.

Dramatic Moments on the Go Board, Abe
Most recent book of book-of-the-month publisher Yutopian. This book is a collection of Blunders By Professional Players. It contains also 2 complete commented games. This is a book for entertainment primarily.

Coming soon: EZ Go (pronounced: easy Go), Bruce and Sue Wilcox
Bruce Wilcox is well known for his lectures on “Instant Go”. Anyone who enjoyed his lectures during the congress of Königswinter or Canterbury will buy this book unseen. If you read his new book you can imagine him performing. In this book he sells go in a package of “magic the gathering”, “Yin & Yang”, “go and business” and whatever more is en vogue. I am sure Bruce will make a good television preacher and a stand-up comedian. This book can only be loved or hated. You can have a look at the sample copy at my bookstand. Your playing strength is irrelevant.
