Buenos Dí,as España

Since Spaniards are seldom seen on Go congresses we took the chance and spoke to Dimas Cabré (2 Dan) and Pau Carles (5 Kyu). They are the are the first Spanish delegation at the Congress for more then ten years.

CN: How many players do you have in Spain?
Dimas: Up to 200 players - optimistically.
Pau: I think 100 is quite enough optimism.
Dimas: But the number is growing in vast rates. In the last four months I found about 15 interested people.
CN: In how many Cities do you have Clubs?
Dimas: We have a regular Go scene in Madrid and Barcelona. But there are activities in three other cities as well.
CN: What kind of people do play Go in Spain, students?
Pau: Only a half of the players are students. There are all kind of people playing Go in Spain. But the most active are students.
CN: What about tournaments?
Dimas: We have two tournaments. The Barcelona tournament took place more then 15 times. Here also players from France and England came along. The other is the Spanish championship which takes place in alternating cities.
CN: Why are Spaniards not playing in European tournaments?
Dimas: We are not used to playing Go outside Spain , also it’s quite expensive. Spanish players think that Kyu level players are displaced at the European championship. Only when I came to the Netherlands people told me that it is great fun to join this event, so here we are.
