Team Tournament

Played on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th, this “side event” came to be the largest side event ‘til now in the 40th Go Congress. A total of 168 players attended this tournament, where friendship and mutual assistance are very important: even a 20 Kyu at the fourth goban, faced with an x Dan, enormously stronger than him, can take his team to final victory. The team was composed of four players who gave themselves a fantasy-name: We have seen a crazy cocktail of italo-japanese-symbolic-surrealistic names, such as “I Brocchi”, “Atari”, “4.25”, “Beethoven” etc. (you can see the complete “panorama” on the wall in the main hall) and often the simple announcement of a match between two of these teams made the spectators laugh. Anyway, the 42 teams played a six round swiss tournament, and the result of a match was given by the number of wins (4-0, 3-1 or 2-2). Moreover, every team had a bonus for the number of countries represented, the number of female players and the difference of level between the players of the team: these bonus points made the situation very unpredictable up until the end of the last round. The final results were:
1st place: “Drunk”
(Sumikura Yasuyuki, 6 Dan + Caspar Nijhuis, 4 Dan + Emil Nijhuis, 4 Dan + Nguyen Minh Quy, 3 Dan)
2nd place: “To Dan”
(Rob Van Zeijst, 7 Dan + Hyuk Lee, 6 Dan + Victor Bogdanov, 6 Dan + Catalina Florea, 11 Kyu)
3rd places: “Team de Sanilhac”
(Ben Malek + Grost + Ehlers + Pedrini); “Best of four” (Calota + Hebsacker + Marti + Coesens) and
“Diaetpuff”
(Miyakawa + Budig + Miclea + Cabbage)
The team tournament was a success, and for the next congresses we hope that the organizers will give this side event a greater importance, and a more suitable schedule during the Congress period.
