The Green Umbrella

Kathleen and I first went to Venice in 1965. There were few tourists even in St. Mark's Square. This time…

"It is quite simple," said the guide: "I shall put up this umbrella. Just follow the green umbrella." Amid such crowds an umbrella was difficult to discern. After losing our guide once, we decided to lose her again, on purpose.

We walked to the Rialto because Shakespeare mentioned it in "The Merchant of Venice". Then we just walked. The tiny streets, with few tourists, are fascination and so quiet! Venice must be the biggest pedestrian precinct in the world. A wonderful city, even without an umbrella.
